Issy-les-Moulineaux borders the southwest corner of Paris, just outside the Boulevard Périphérique. The Seine runs along its western edge, with the Île Saint-Germain lying in the channel, and the town climbs from the flat riverside up onto a slope toward Meudon. The street pattern mixes old village lanes with long, straight modern avenues.
Issy has a notable place in aviation history. In 1908 Henri Farman flew the first one-kilometre closed-circuit flight in Europe from the parade ground at Issy, and the Paris heliport still sits on that ground at the edge of the city. Much of the riverfront, once industrial, now holds offices and media companies.
