Ivrea lies in northern Piedmont on the Dora Baltea river, where the valley from Aosta opens onto the plain. From above, the old town climbs a hill on the left bank toward the cathedral and castle, while newer districts spread along the river and across the valley floor. Around it, the hills of a large glacial moraine enclose small lakes.
The town is known as the home of Olivetti, the typewriter and computer company, and its twentieth-century industrial and residential buildings were recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. Ivrea is also famous for its carnival and the Battle of the Oranges, held each winter in the streets of the old town.
