Jamestown sits in Chautauqua County in the far southwestern corner of New York State, where Chautauqua Lake narrows and drains into the Chadakoin River. The downtown lies in the river valley. From there the street grid climbs the hills to the north and south, so the regular layout bends and steepens as it reaches the higher neighbourhoods.
The city grew as a manufacturing centre, long known for furniture making, and its downtown still has solid brick blocks from that era. It is also the hometown of Lucille Ball. Today it is home to the National Comedy Center, as well as the Robert H. Jackson Center, named after the Supreme Court justice and Nuremberg prosecutor who practised law here.
