Jaraguá do Sul sits in a narrow valley in the north of Santa Catarina, hemmed in by steep, forested hills. The Itapocu River winds through the middle, and the town grew along its banks. The city was settled largely by German, Italian and Hungarian immigrants, and that heritage still shows in its festivals, including the Schützenfest shooting festival.
