Jiading is a district on the northwestern edge of Shanghai, and on a map it reads as two layers at once. At its core sits an old walled town whose outline is almost circular, traced by a surviving moat. Canals cross inside that ring and meet near the centre, a pattern that has held for centuries while the modern district spread outward in broad blocks, rail lines and expressway ramps.
The historic core keeps some of the most intact landmarks in the Shanghai area. The Confucian Temple, founded in the Song dynasty, sits beside the quiet Huilongtan pond, and the slim Fahua Pagoda rises over the canal near the old centre. Further south lies Nanxiang, the town widely credited with the soup dumplings known as xiaolongbao, and its classical garden, Guyi Yuan.
Jiading is also Shanghai's car district. Anting hosts large automotive plants and the Shanghai International Circuit, whose looping track shows clearly at larger scales.
