Jingling is the central urban area of Tianmen, in Hubei, and it sits on the Jianghan Plain, one of the flattest and wettest landscapes in central China. The map shows it clearly. With no hills to bend the roads, the streets run in long straight lines. Water is everywhere: small rivers, drainage channels and ponds fill the spaces between neighbourhoods and fields.
Jingling is also the historic name of the area, and it carries a well-known association. Lu Yu, the Tang dynasty writer of The Classic of Tea, is traditionally said to have grown up here. Today the town is a regional centre surrounded by intensively farmed land, with newer districts added along wide arterial roads.
