Kabala is the principal town of Koinadugu District in the far north of Sierra Leone, set on upland ground where the country rises towards the Guinea border. The landscape around it is higher and cooler than the coast, with granite hills and open savanna. On a map the town reads as a compact core ringed by rising ground.
The Wara Wara Mountains stand close to the town, and their outline explains much of the street pattern. Roads push out where the land allows and bend around the slopes where it does not. In the centre, a loose network of streets and lanes connects markets, homes and administrative buildings, and it becomes sparser towards the edge of the hills.
