Kākori lies just west of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, on the flat plains of the Ganges basin. From above, the town is a close cluster of old lanes and houses surrounded by fields and orchards, with the main roads and the railway to Lucknow running nearby.
The town has a place in Indian history. In August 1925 revolutionaries of the independence movement stopped a train near Kākori and seized the government money it was carrying, an event now remembered as the Kakori train action. The town has also given its name to the Kakori kebab, a well-known dish of Awadhi cuisine.
