Kea Map Poster
Kea is the Cycladic island nearest to Athens, reached by ferry from Lavrio on the Attica coast. From above it is compact and roughly oval, rising to hills in the middle and dropping to a coast of small coves. Only a few roads wind across the island, following ridges between valleys, and much of the land is crossed by old footpaths and terraced slopes.
The ferry arrives at Korissia, on a deep bay in the northwest, with Vourkari a short walk along the shore. Inland, the main town of Ioulida clings to a hillside, its lanes too narrow and steep for cars, forming a tight knot of lines on the map. Nearby, the Lion of Kea, an archaic figure carved into the rock, looks out across the valley.
In antiquity the island was divided among four city-states, and it was home to the lyric poets Simonides and Bacchylides. Today it remains quieter than many of the Cyclades, known for walking routes and oak woodland.
