From above, Kos town sits on the flat northeastern corner of its island. The streets fan out from a rounded harbour, where the Castle of the Knights guards the entrance, and the town then gives way to a long coastal strip. Across a narrow stretch of water, the Turkish coast near Bodrum is close enough to show on a wide frame.
Inside the town, the street pattern mixes periods. Excavated ancient areas, including the agora and sections of the Roman town, leave open blocks among the modern streets. The oldest part of the grid stays tight near the harbour. Further out, the streets loosen into straighter residential lanes and the roads that run along the island.
