Krishnarājāsāgara takes its name from the dam and reservoir built across the Kaveri River northwest of Mysuru in Karnataka. On a map, the reservoir is the largest shape by far. It is a wide, branching body of water that fills old river valleys, with fingers of shoreline running into the surrounding farmland. The dam is a firm straight line across its eastern edge.
Below the dam, the ground changes character. The Brindavan Gardens step down in formal terraces, and their symmetrical paths and water channels make a geometric pattern next to the looser lines of the river. The township is small and practical.
