Kuala Pilah is a district town in Negeri Sembilan, set in a valley among forested hills in the interior of the Malay Peninsula. In Malay, 'kuala' refers to the place where rivers meet, and from above the town follows its lowland setting: a compact commercial centre of shophouse rows, with roads fanning out along the valleys between the hills.
The district is at the centre of Negeri Sembilan's Minangkabau heritage. Nearby Seri Menanti is the state's royal town, home to a traditional timber palace. The surrounding villages still keep the upswept roof forms associated with the culture.
