Lagos lies on the western Algarve coast, where the Bensafrim river meets the Atlantic. From above, the old town is a tight cluster inside the line of its historic walls, set right beside the estuary and the marina. To the east, the long curve of Meia Praia runs along the bay.
South of the centre, the coast breaks into the cliffs, arches and sea stacks of Ponta da Piedade. Even at map scale they make an unusually intricate shoreline. Newer neighbourhoods climb the gentle slopes behind the town, where the street grid opens up into wider, more regular blocks.
