Le Chesnay sits directly north of Versailles, and on a map the two towns are almost impossible to separate. Streets run down from the plateau toward the palace district and fade into Versailles without a break. Most of the commune is residential: small blocks of villas and apartment buildings, crossed by a few straight avenues that carry traffic toward Paris and the western suburbs.
Since 2019 the commune has been part of Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt, after merging with its smaller northern neighbour. That merger shows on the map as a transition from dense streets to the looser pattern of Rocquencourt, where roads widen and green space increases.
