Lecheng is the urban centre of Lechang, in the north of Guangdong province near the border with Hunan. On a map, the town lies along a river valley, with hills rising around it on several sides. The built-up area follows the flat land by the water, so it is long rather than round, and the streets run parallel to the river.
This is a mountainous part of Guangdong, very different from the dense Pearl River Delta further south. Roads and rail lines follow the valleys because the terrain leaves few other routes. The town has grown across the river with bridges linking the two banks, and newer districts reach out along the valley floor.
