Leslie lies on the Highveld of Mpumalanga, in the flat, high grassland that stretches across the eastern interior of South Africa. On a map the town is small and clearly defined: a compact grid of streets for the older town, and nearby, larger residential areas laid out in their own patterns, separated by open land, as is common in towns shaped by South Africa's twentieth-century planning.
The surrounding region is largely agricultural, with maize and other crops grown on the wide, open fields, and the wider area also has a strong connection to coal mining and industry around Secunda. Straight roads cross the landscape between farms, towns and industrial sites, giving the area its long, uninterrupted horizons.
