Luau lies in the far east of Angola's Moxico province, on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Congolese town of Dilolo sits just across the line. From above, Luau is a small town on the high, open plateau, with its streets spread around the railway and the roads leading to the border.
Luau is known for its place on the Benguela Railway, which runs from the Atlantic port of Lobito across the whole of Angola to this eastern frontier and on toward the mining regions of Katanga. In the colonial era, the town was called Teixeira de Sousa. The rail line remains its defining feature on the map.
