Luomen is in Tianshui prefecture in southeastern Gansu, in the upper valley of the Wei River. Here the loess plateau is cut into steep hills and ravines, and in towns like this the land decides the shape of the map. Streets are pressed into the valley floor, so the town is long and narrow and follows the river.
From above, the Wei is the main line, flanked by roads and a railway that use the same flat ground. Side valleys branch off into the hills, with smaller lanes and settlements climbing along them. Beyond the town, the terrain is terraced and irregular, and the dense grid of a plains city never appears.
