Luz lies in the centre-west of Minas Gerais, in an agricultural region of low rolling hills, pasture and streams that drain towards the São Francisco basin. The town's name simply means "light" in Portuguese. On a map, its streets form a fairly regular pattern that bends gently with the contour of the land.
As in many towns in the interior of Minas Gerais, the centre gathers around a main church and square. Luz is the seat of a Catholic diocese, and its cathedral stands at the heart of the older streets. From there, blocks spread out towards newer neighbourhoods, and roads lead away across the surrounding farmland.
