Mafraq lies in northern Jordan on the flat steppe that stretches east toward the Iraqi border. The name means junction or crossroads, and the map shows why. Major roads converge on the town from Amman, Irbid, the Syrian border and the eastern desert, and the street grid spreads out from where they meet.
The town has long been a transit point. It had a station on the historic Hejaz Railway, and it still lies on the main routes north and east. In recent years Mafraq has become known internationally because the Zaatari refugee camp, which sheltered large numbers of Syrians, is located nearby.
