Makwassie is a small town in South Africa's North West province, in the flat maize and cattle country of the western Highveld. The land around it is open and gently rolling, so from above the town sits as a compact, clearly bounded shape surrounded by large farm parcels and long straight district roads.
The older part of town follows an orderly grid of blocks, a layout typical of South African country towns founded in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A stream, the Makwassie Spruit, winds past, its bends contrasting with the right angles of the streets.
