Mangalvedha is a town in the Solapur district of southern Maharashtra, on the dry, open plain of the Deccan plateau. From above, the old centre is a compact, irregular knot of lanes, clearly older than the straighter roads and newer housing around it. Beyond them the map opens onto wide farmland divided by field boundaries and crossed by country roads.
The town holds a long place in the Marathi devotional tradition. It is associated with the poet-saints Chokhamela and Kanhopatra and with Damaji Pant, and it lies not far from Pandharpur, the main pilgrimage centre of the Varkari movement. The remains of an old fort also survive in the town, a sign of its earlier importance.
