Mariestad sits on the eastern shore of Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, where the river Tidan flows into it. Duke Charles, later King Charles IX, founded the town in 1583 and named it after his wife, Maria of the Palatinate. For a long time it was the residence of the governor of Skaraborg county, and its cathedral still stands on the skyline.
The map is dominated by water. The irregular Vänern shoreline, with its inlets, points and small islands, forms the town's western edge. The Tidan cuts through the centre on its way to the lake.
