Maruoka lies on the Fukui plain north of Fukui city, now part of the city of Sakai. The town grew around a low hill crowned by Maruoka Castle, and on the map the streets still gather around this point, with the flat rice fields of the plain spreading out on every side.
The castle's keep is one of the twelve original castle keeps surviving in Japan and among the oldest of them. The town is also associated with a famously short letter written by a samurai to his wife, and it is known for the cherry blossoms that surround the castle in spring. The Kuzuryū River flows to the south.
