Masterton is the largest town in the Wairarapa, in the southeast of New Zealand's North Island, on a broad plain between the Tararua Range to the west and rolling farmland to the east. From above, its street plan is a fairly regular grid, crossed by the river and the railway line, with the main street running through the centre and suburbs spreading out on every side.
The Waipoua River runs through the town, and Queen Elizabeth Park beside it forms a large green space close to the centre. Masterton is also known well beyond New Zealand as the home of the Golden Shears, a sheep-shearing competition held every year since the early 1960s, a reminder of the farming country around the town.
