Mayahi is a town in the Maradi Region of southern Niger, in the Sahel belt between the Sahara and the wetter lands to the south. The countryside is flat and dry for much of the year, used for rain-fed farming and herding. The town serves as the centre of its department and a market for the villages around it.
From above, Mayahi looks nothing like a gridded city. Buildings are grouped in walled compounds, and the spaces between them form an irregular network of sandy streets and tracks. Main roads cross the town and connect it to Maradi and other centres, but most of the plan is made up of short, organic paths.
