Mchinji is the administrative centre of Mchinji District in Malawi's Central Region, west of Lilongwe and close to the border with Zambia. The main road from the capital runs through it on the way to the Mwami crossing, and the town has grown along that road.
The map shows a linear town. A central strip holds the market, district offices and trading stores along the highway, and residential areas spread in looser blocks behind it. The railway that links Malawi with Chipata in Zambia also passes this way, a second line running roughly parallel to the road through the gently rolling plateau.
