Meng’a lies in Menghai County, in the Xishuangbanna region of southern Yunnan, close to the borders with Myanmar and Laos. On a map the town is a small settlement on a basin floor. A few main streets cross at its centre, and roads wind out through the surrounding hills, following valleys and ridgelines rather than straight routes.
Menghai County is well known as one of the main areas for Pu'er tea, and the hills around the county's towns are widely planted with tea. The region is also home to the Dai people and several other ethnic groups, whose villages scatter across the valleys.
