Mengyin is the seat of a county in Linyi, in southern Shandong, and it lies in the middle of the Yimeng mountain region. The town occupies a valley, and on the map its streets are held in place by the surrounding ridges: the centre forms a compact grid on the flat ground, while the roads beyond it curve and climb.
Mount Meng, one of the best-known peaks in Shandong, rises in the wider area, and the hills around the county are widely planted with orchards. Mengyin is particularly known in China for its peaches.
