Metapán is in the far northwest of El Salvador, a short distance from the borders with Guatemala and Honduras. Its centre follows the Spanish colonial plan: a regular grid of blocks around a main plaza. At the edges of town, the grid gives way to roads that climb into the surrounding hills.
