Midstream is a planned residential estate in Gauteng, on the highveld between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Many older towns grew outward from a station or a market square. Midstream was designed as a whole, and the map shows it. Roads loop and curve instead of meeting in a grid, and short cul-de-sacs branch off them like leaves from a stem, each ending in a tight turning circle.
Between the housing clusters, open ground runs in ribbons: drainage lines, green belts and sports fields that break up the rooftops and give the plan its rhythm. On paper these gaps read as white space, and that white space is what makes the pattern of streets around them easy to read. Small dead-end streets fan out from the collector roads, each closing in a round turning head. Repeated across the map, they form a fine texture of loops and bulbs.
Green corridors
Strips of open land run between neighbourhoods, following low ground and linking parks and fields. In black and white they become calm bands of empty paper that frame the built areas.
