Minna, the capital of Niger State, sits in north-central Nigeria among low granite hills. From above, the city looks irregular. A web of main roads comes together near the centre, residential areas spread out along them, and bare rocky ridges break the street pattern so the city grows around them rather than over them.
The railway between Lagos and the north passes through Minna, and it helped the town develop as a transport and administrative centre. Minna is also known as the hometown of two former Nigerian heads of state, which gives it a certain place in national political history.
