Mithi is the headquarters of Tharparkar district in Sindh, in the Thar Desert of southeastern Pakistan. On a map the town appears as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by open, sandy country. Dunes rise in long ridges, and roads follow the easiest routes between them. There are no rivers here, and the landscape is shaped by wind rather than water.
The town is widely noted for the long coexistence of its Hindu and Muslim communities, who share its markets and neighbourhoods. Gadi Bhit, a small hill on the edge of town, looks out across Mithi and the desert beyond and is a popular place to watch the sun set over the dunes. After the monsoon rains, the surrounding sand briefly turns green with grass and crops.
