Molins de Rei lies in the Baix Llobregat, just west of Barcelona, on the left bank of the Llobregat River where the valley narrows. The town is squeezed between the river and the wooded slopes of Collserola, so its streets run in a long band parallel to the water. Motorways, railway lines and the river all follow the same corridor, giving the map strong parallel lines.
Its name means the king's mills, after the medieval mills that once used the river's water. The town is known across Catalonia for the Fira de la Candelera, a large agricultural and commercial fair held every February for centuries. In the centre stands the Palau Requesens, a former palace now used as the town hall.
