Montclair lies in Essex County, New Jersey, on the eastern slope of the first Watchung Mountain. From above, the lower town has a more regular pattern of streets around Bloomfield Avenue and the railway, while the upper parts curve and climb with the ridge. Large residential lots, mature trees and winding roads give the western side a softer, more organic texture.
A commuter rail line runs through Montclair with several stations, which helped the town grow as a residential suburb of New York. The Montclair Art Museum, the Presby Iris Gardens and parks along the ridge are well known locally, and from the high ground there are views east across the plain to the Manhattan skyline.
