Mori is a town in western Shizuoka Prefecture, in the hill country north of Fukuroi. Its centre sits in the valley of the Ōta River. From above, the streets form a compact, irregular pattern along the river and the main roads, with rice paddies, tea fields and wooded slopes rising around them.
The town is known for Oguni Shrine, one of the principal shrines of the old Tōtōmi province, whose wooded grounds lie in the northern part of town. On a Mori map poster, the shrine's forest, the river corridor and the older street pattern give the design a layered, historic feel that suits the town's slower pace.
Mori is sometimes called the little Kyoto of the Enshū region for its old streets and temples, and it is the home town linked to the legendary figure Mori no Ishimatsu. The Tenryū Hamanako Railway passes through, and on the map its single line traces a gentle curve across the valley.
