Mudanjiang lies in the southeast of Heilongjiang, in a valley surrounded by forested hills. The Mudan River flows through the city, and the main urban area spreads along both banks. On the map the river is the clear axis. Bridges connect the two halves, and a riverside promenade runs along the water.
The streets form a fairly regular grid in the centre, typical of northeastern Chinese cities that grew with the railway in the twentieth century. Railway lines curve into the city from several directions. Away from the river, the grid follows the valley and fades into the surrounding hills.
The region is known for its landscapes. To the south lies Jingpo Lake, a long mountain lake formed by volcanic lava blocking the river, and the area is famous for heavy winter snow. A Mudanjiang map poster shows a river city framed by forest in China's far northeast.
