Mu’er lies in the hilly country north of central Chongqing. Very little of the land here is flat, and the map shows it. Roads curl around ridges instead of crossing them, and buildings gather wherever the slopes ease off. The result is an irregular, organic street pattern, closer to a leaf's veins than to a grid.
Chongqing is known for layered, vertical terrain, and Mu’er gives a smaller-scale version of it. Built-up areas cluster along the main routes, while farmland and wooded hillsides fill the gaps.
