Muzaffargarh Map Poster & Print

Muzaffargarh lies in southern Punjab on the doab between two great rivers. The Chenab runs to the east towards Multan, and the Indus flows further to the west. On a map the town is a dense cluster of streets in a landscape of fields, canals and wandering river channels. Main roads and a railway line link it across the Chenab to Multan.

The town is named after Nawab Muzaffar Khan, a governor of Multan who built a fort here in the late eighteenth century. The core grew around that fort and its bazaars, and the district around it became farming country known for cotton, wheat and sugarcane. Because it sits low between two rivers, the area is prone to flooding, most severely in 2010.

A Muzaffargarh map poster shows how the town fits into this watery plain. The compact centre prints as a dark knot of lanes, and canals and roads reach outward in long lines. With the rivers at its edges, the design reads as a portrait of a place shaped by water and farming and by the old routes between Multan and the Indus.

Between two rivers

The Chenab and the Indus run on either side of the district. The town sits on a wide alluvial strip marked by old channels, embankments and seasonal floodplains.

02

Fort-town core

The oldest part of the town grew around the late eighteenth-century fort and its bazaars. It is still the densest cluster of streets at the centre of the map.

03

Canals and fields

Irrigation canals cut straight lines through the surrounding farmland and cross the grid of fields, giving the edges of the map a quiet, regular texture.
