Nampa is in Canyon County, west of Boise, in the Treasure Valley of southwestern Idaho. It began as a railroad town in the 1880s, and the map still shows that. The downtown grid is aligned to the tracks, running on a diagonal, while the newer neighbourhoods follow the north–south section lines of the surrounding farmland.
The two grids meet at odd angles, which gives Nampa's street map an unusual shape. Interstate 84 runs across the north side of the city. To the southwest lies Lake Lowell, an irrigation reservoir inside Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, and canals wind through the fields and subdivisions around it.
