Nanxi is a district of Yibin in southern Sichuan, set along the Yangtze a short distance downstream from where the Min and Jinsha rivers meet. On a map the town follows the river closely, with streets lined up parallel to the water and hills rising behind them, so that the built-up area forms a long, narrow band rather than a compact circle.
Yibin is often described as the first city on the Yangtze, since the river takes that name at the confluence. Nanxi shares that setting on a smaller scale, with an older riverfront core and newer blocks added along the banks as the area has expanded. The terrain around it is green and folded, with farmland and wooded slopes between the valleys.
