Nawalgarh lies in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, on the dry plain northwest of Jaipur. From above, the old town is a dense web of narrow lanes, with courtyard houses packed closely together. Newer streets and roads spread outward from there into sandy farmland, and the town edges fade into open ground.
The town was founded in the eighteenth century by Thakur Nawal Singh, from whom it takes its name. It is best known for its havelis, merchants' mansions whose walls are covered with frescoes, and several of them, including the Poddar and Morarka havelis, are open to visitors. It is one of the reasons Shekhawati is called an open-air gallery.
