Neelagiri lies on the outskirts of Thanjavur, in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu. It is some of the flattest and most thoroughly irrigated land in southern India. From above, residential streets give way to paddy fields divided by channels, and the land is split into small, water-fed plots.
Water defines the map. Canals and distributaries of the Cauvery system run across the area, and temple tanks and village ponds appear as neat rectangles or rounded pools.
