Shenango and Neshannock
The creek and river meet close to downtown, splitting the city into distinct sections and giving the poster two sweeping pale curves through the centre.

New Castle, the seat of Lawrence County, grew where Neshannock Creek flows into the Shenango River, and just south of the city the Shenango joins the Mahoning to form the Beaver River. From above, the downtown is a regular grid set in a valley, with neighbourhoods climbing the surrounding hills and streets bending to follow the waterways and old rail corridors.
The city built its fortunes on tin plate, steel and pottery in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is also known as the Fireworks Capital of America, home to long-established fireworks companies whose displays have lit up celebrations across the United States. That industrial heritage remains visible on the map as broad parcels along the rivers and tracks.
A New Castle map poster brings out the meeting of water and industry. The creeks cut clean curves through the street pattern, the grid shifts angle from one hillside to the next, and rail lines draw long diagonal strokes across the composition. It is a very legible portrait of a Rust Belt city shaped by rivers and the railways that followed them.

Downtown grid
A tight rectangular grid on the valley floor marks the historic commercial core, with the courthouse district at its heart and hill neighbourhoods rising around it.
Rail corridors
Long, gently curving rail lines follow the river valleys, a reminder of the tin and steel works that once lined them and still shape the city's edges.
