Nima is the seat of Maqu County in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on the high grasslands in the south-west of Gansu. The town stands at well over three thousand metres, in open, rolling pastureland. The Yellow River flows nearby as it makes one of its great bends across the plateau, before turning back north.
The town itself is compact: a few main streets with government buildings, shops and housing, and smaller lanes around them. Beyond that, the map becomes a wide expanse of grassland crossed by the meandering channels of the river and its tributaries. Herding has long shaped life in this region, and the town serves as a gathering point for the surrounding pastoral communities.
