North Andover spreads across a wide area of the Merrimack Valley, with a denser pattern of streets in the north near the mill city of Lawrence and a more open, wooded landscape to the south. Older roads run out from the centre in irregular lines, as they do in many New England towns that grew from farm tracks rather than a planned grid.
Water is the most striking element on the map. Lake Cochichewick, the town’s drinking water supply, lies in the northern part of town as a long, pale shape bordered by conservation land. Interstate 495 cuts across the northern edge, while Route 114 and Route 125 carry traffic through the commercial corridors.
The town is home to Merrimack College, and its historic district near the Old Center includes a common surrounded by early houses. The poet Anne Bradstreet, one of the first published writers in colonial America, lived in the settlement here.
