Ōdate lies in a basin in the north of Akita Prefecture, with mountains on all sides and the Yoneshiro River flowing across it. From above, the town centre sits on the flat land near the river, and a mix of streets, rail lines and rice paddies fills the valley floor. Forested slopes close in around the edges of the frame.
Ōdate is best known as the home of the Akita dog. Hachikō, the loyal dog honoured with a statue at Shibuya Station in Tokyo, was born near here. The city is also known for magewappa, bentwood boxes made from local cedar, and for the Ōdate Jukai Dome, one of the largest wooden domes in the world.
