Oltu is in Erzurum Province, in the highlands of northeastern Anatolia. The town follows the valley of the Oltu River, and its map is long and narrow. Streets run parallel to the water, and short lanes climb the lower slopes on either side. Beyond them, the steep, open hills leave wide empty spaces in the frame.
A castle stands above the town, one of the reminders that this valley has been a route between the Anatolian plateau and the Caucasus for centuries. The built-up area is compact and practical, shaped by the valley rather than by any plan. On a poster, the river and the main road read as one long axis.
