Ostrogozhsk is a town in Voronezh Oblast in southern Russia, founded in 1652 as a fortress on the Belgorod defensive line that guarded the southern frontier. It sits on the Tikhaya Sosna, a tributary of the Don, and on the map the river winds along the edge of the town through meadows and wooded floodplain.
The town was later rebuilt on a regular plan, and its centre still shows a clear grid of wide streets and square blocks. Ostrogozhsk is known as the birthplace of the painter Ivan Kramskoi, one of the leading figures of the Peredvizhniki movement, and a museum in the town is dedicated to his work.
