Palaiseau lies in the Essonne department south of Paris, and its map is defined by a change in height. The older town sits in the valley of the Yvette, with winding streets, a church and small plots. Since 1976 the plateau has been home to the École polytechnique, one of France's most prestigious engineering schools, and it now forms part of the Paris-Saclay scientific cluster.
